The night is dark and full of horror and bizarre animated films at Anim'est 2017

Creepy Animation Night reaches its 9th edition

The first weekend of the twelfth edition of the Anim'est International Animation Film Festival brings with it two of the most beloved events on the festival agenda, dedicated to our adult audience who loves to get a thrill and is entirely uninhibited: Trippy Animation Night will take place on Friday, September 29th - the first night of the festival, followed by Creepy Animation Night on Saturday, September 30th.

For the sixth time at Anim'est, Dutchman Michael Helmerhorst, the curator and host of the bizarre and unconventional animation night - Trippy Animation Night – offers us a fresh show aimed at bringing the audience out of the comfort zone. A selection of fast & furious animations, psychedelic videos and shocking commercials, collected from rare archives or from oh so generous YouTube, will fill a two-hour programme exclusively for viewers more than 18 years old. Sideshow Freaks, Drug Abuse & Other Experiments, Dark City Dames or Splatter & Gore are just a few of the subthemes of this year's edition, which will begin on the first Friday of the festival, starting from 23.00 at Cinema Eforie.

One of the most successful events taking place at Anim'est, Creepy Animation Night, reaches its 9th edition this year and has something special in store. The selection of films that offer our audience a trip to the darkest side of animation will be preceded by a performance coming from DIOSA, a unique projectRomania, initiated by composer and conductor Simona Strungaru. It is a complex musical concept that combines classical music by exploiting complex orchestration elements and compositional processes specific to various periods in music history and contemporary electronic music elements. The project includes Simona Strungaru (conductor, piano), Gabriela Petecilă (flute), Bogdan Gugu (clarinet), Iulian Niţică (counter-bassoon), Sebastian Burneci (trumpet), Cristian Lăbuş (bass trombone) and Natalia Pancec (violin). The project which will premiere during Creepy Animation Night will be accompanied by visuals created during the latest edition animation workshop known as Animation Worksheep, organized by Anim’est, and its overarching theme will be the end of the day and time at midnight, when biarre creatures come to life and unexpected, terrifying events are unleashed.

The end of the performance will be highlighted by the artistic show coming from choreographer, actor and dancer Paul Cosma-Cimpoieru, and inspired by the same theme concerning the struggle against time. FASON Salon by Cristina Grama, alongside Alexandra Grama, Christina Oné Photography and Maria Radu Makeup Artist will be in charge of the artists’ on stage look.

DIOSA's cine-concert will be followed by a three-hour marathon of horror and bizarre animation, including the latest short animated film adapted after comic strips created by Dave Cooper, a special guest at this year’s Anim'est and directed by Rune Spaans - The Absence of Eddy Table. The selection of animated movies will be complemented by the most terrifying stories narrated with the help of various animation techniques: stop motion, 2D, 3D or cut-out, as one can see in the bizarre and excellent short film The Carnival of the Animals, inspired by the music of famous Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns, but anchored in the bleak reality of the present day. The antichrist, the three-headed monsters, the cats killer and life after death are just a few of the characters and themes of Creepy Animation Night 2017 which starts on Saturday, September 30th at 24.00 at Eforie Cinema, where the DIOSA performance will also take place, and Elvire Popesco Cinema at 24.00, where only the movies will be screened.
