BAP backbone - the anatomy of an animation collective

BAP animation studio is made up of a group of authors who are exclusively involved in making animated films. This masterclass aims to explain a little of how this collective was established, and how it has been treading its path over more than ten years of existence.

Masterclass with David Doutel, Vasco Sá, and Laura Gonçalves

Vasco Sá and David Doutel met in 2002 at the School of Arts-UCP, Portugal, while they were attending a Master’s degree course in Sound and Image. Since then, they have been working together on multiple projects, recognized and awarded nationally and internationally. They co-directed the shorts: “The Shoemaker” (2011, PT/ES), “Soot” (2014, PT), “Augur” (2018, PT/FR) and “Garrano” (PT/LT), their most recent work. They have been collaborating with Bando à Parte since 2011, being involved in several animated films of different authors, both in the artistic and production departments. They co-founded BAP – Animation Studio, where they work as directors and producers. Vasco and David are currently working on their first animated feature film.

Laura Gonçalves studied Fine Arts in Lisbon, and after working in several animation films as inbetweener and art finalist, she directed her first animation short "Three Weeks in December", for Animation Masters in Arts University of Bournemouth. In 2017 she co-directed with Alexandra Ramires (Xá) "Drop by Drop", and in 2022 she directs "The Garbage Man". Laura is one of the founding members of the Cooperative BAP Animation Studio, where she is co-directing with Alexandra Ramires, their most recent animation "Percebes".
