Sustainability Report

For 20 years, Animest has promoted animation as a tool for expression, inclusion, and community. Our core mission remains the same, but we need to better define our position regarding the environmental challenges around us.

We are aware of Animest’s role in the Romanian cultural scene, especially since part of our festival is aimed at children and teenagers. Therefore, in addition to reducing our climate footprint, we believe that the greatest impact Animest can have is to set an example and promote a set of positive principles to our audience.

The purpose of this document is to bring together, in a transparent way, both the actions we are taking and the objectives we are aiming towards but have not yet met, to ensure that we are moving in the right direction.

Awareness

YES

  • At the Animest.20 gala we will offer the Green Sheep Badge, a mention for an animated film that addresses environmental and sustainability themes, chosen by the Animest team.
  • We promote films with environmental themes in our programs, especially for children
  • We promote environmental themes in the workshops we organize. At Animest.20 we will organize a creative workshop for adults in which they will learn to make color pigments from flowers.
  • We will continue to publish and promote the Sustainability Report each year

NEXT

  • After Animest.20 will complete, at least partially, the Green Charter for Film Festivals
  • We will report more concrete numbers for the chapters of this report, which we can use to evaluate our progress.

Transportation

YES

  • We choose the festival locations to be as close as possible to each other. The locations are well connected by public transport and we provide international guests with information about the system.
  • We always try to group guests when offering transportation.

NO

  • We do not offer free urban transportation. We have not yet managed to establish a partnership with Metrorex.
  • We do not currently feel that it is appropriate to promote land alternatives to flying for most guests given Romania’s poor land infrastructure.

NEXT

  • We will make efforts to establish a partnership with a public transportation operator.

Partners

YES

  • We carefully consider each potential partner. Financial realities do not allow us to be perfect, but we try to avoid partners who do not share our values.
  • We collaborate with partners who promote environmental themes, such as Magazinul Zero Waste or Ecopolis.

NO

  • We have not raised sustainability issues with festival locations so far, partly because we have very few alternatives.

NEXT

  • We plan to do a basic analysis of the sustainability of our locations for the next edition.

Food and Drink

YES

  • We have decided to completely give up small water bottles, after having so many last year. We replace them with filters and, where larger volumes are needed, with 5L bottles (with pumps), to minimize waste.
  • We offer our volunteers water bottles to encourage them to fill them from our water sources and to avoid plastic cups.
  • Team members and guests have meals provided at restaurants, where only as many portions as are needed are prepared
  • For volunteers we organize snack corners. These contain types of food that have a long shelf life and we only resupply when needed.

NO

  • Although we always offer vegetarian and, if possible, vegan options, we have not yet given up on animal products for our team and volunteers.

NEXT

  • We continue to look for a feasible solution to avoid packaged food for volunteers and staff

Promotional

YES

  • This is the second year in a row that we no longer produce new t-shirts and bags. We sell from the remaining stocks and offer a print on demand solution, with Printoteca, for the models from the current edition.
  • Whenever we can, we print promotional materials (flags, roll-ups) with generic branding, not edition-specific, so they can be reused as much as possible.
  • We have produced new items from recycled banners at Re:Mesh. However, in recent years we have not produced banners.
  • We review the number of posters and brochures printed every year, so as to avoid unused materials.
  • We have stopped printing badges for some categories of guests and just send them a digital version

NO

  • We print all badges on plastic. We have not yet found a more sustainable, affordable and suitable solution for a long festival.

NEXT

  • We plan to stop producing lanyards from the next edition and encourage people to bring their own.
