British animation has a long anddistinguished history dating back to 1901, a film called "Dolly's Toys" which was a mixture of live action and stop-motion puppet animation. The artform developed over the decades as new techniques were introduced and great animators like Len Lye, John Halas and Bob Godfrey earned reputations worldwide for innovation and originality. The establishment of animation courses in British film schools and art colleges in the 1970s and '80s was the foundation for another burst of creativity which coincided with a huge growth in the number of women animation directors, a trend which continues today.
We have hand-picked a programme of strikingly diverse and entertaining films ranging from examples of outstanding student work (KAMIYA'S CORRESPONDENCE, BADGERED, BUS RIDE AND FLOWERS IN HER HAIR) to award-winners from some of our most lauded and experienced animators (DAD'S DEAD, JOJO IN THE STARS). The strong profile of women animators is reflected by the fact that four of the ten in this programme (THE GATES OF HEAVEN, films BADGERED, SLEEP WITH THE FISHES, HIS PASSIONATE BRIDE) are directed by women. We hope you liked it as much as we do.
