GoCritic! 2022: A Platform for Emerging Film Critics at Animest

In 2022, Animest hosted the GoCritic! workshop, aimed at developing the critical writing skills of emerging film critics. This workshop, led by Vladan Petkovic, a journalist, film critic, and festival programmer, took place from October 9th to 16th, offering participants the opportunity to engage with animated films and refine their critique abilities. Vladan Petkovic, also the head of studies for GoCritic!, provided professional guidance to the participants, helping them shape their voices and navigate the world of film criticism.

Here are the six participants of GoCritic! 2022, along with the films they critiqued and links to their articles:

  • Mădălina Buțulan wrote about Do Not Feed the Pigeons by Antonin Niclass (UK, 2021), a film exploring urban themes through a unique animation style, and Where is Anne Frank? by Ari Folman, reflecting on Anne Frank's life. Her articles can be found here and here.
  • Dalesia Cozorici analyzed The Seine's Tears, a cathartic short film about the 1961 Paris massacre of Algerian protesters. Her review is available here.
  • Oana Darie analyzed several films, including Inu-Oh by Masaaki Yuasa (article published on Cineuropa) and Amok by Balázs Turai (available on Zippy Frames).
  • Emilian Lungu critiqued Mickey’s Descent Into Madness by Tom Bourgeois and Joanna Kozuch's animated documentary Once there was a sea…, which won the Best Anidoc Award at Animest. His articles are published on Zippy Frames and Cineuropa.
  • Among Vlad Marina's four articles, one reviews My Love Affair with Marriage by Signe Baumane, praising its feminist themes and creative animation.
  • One of Andrei Voineag's articles discusses the revival of Romanian animation, focusing on the Animest festival and creators like Matei Branea.

This edition of GoCritic! emphasized the importance of nurturing young critics, providing them with a space to engage with animated films and contribute to the ongoing discourse in film criticism.
