Anim'est organizers appeal to the public for donations to make the 8th edition of the festival possible

Despite being acknowledged as one of the greatest cultural events in Romania and one of the most important animation film festivals in Central and Eastern Europe, Anim’est is severely affected by an acute lack of funding, the organizing of the 2012th edition itself being questioned for a long time.

Estenest therefore appeals to all of its supporters, to those who believe in Anim’est’s mission and values. Contributions both large and small can be together essential to make a new edition of the festival possible.

For the past seven years, the organizers of Anim’est Film Festival have tried, by all means and resources, to bring the newest and most important animation products to the public, and equally important, to reinvigorate the Romanian animation. In its seven-year existence, Anim’est has brought to its more than 100.000 spectators over 2000 animation films, 10 workshops during the festival and two other workshops in addition to the festival (Animation Worksheep- April 2011 and May 2012). The Anim’est organizers’ wish is that the Animation Worksheep becomes the first animation school in Romania, a permanent animation workshop with trainings, master classes and courses held all throughout the year.

Anim’est has grown from year to year, in inverse proportion to the financial support received from public institutions (particularly the CNC). Together with the festival’s evolution, we have witnessed a real progress among Romanian animators, some of whom continue to produce animation films mainly to be part in the future editions of the festival.

Back in 2006, only two Romanian animated short films entered the competition, compared to almost fifty, in 2012. Meanwhile, the CNC has created a separate funding line for the animation film. Furthermore, the first Romanian animated feature in more than two decades was released in 2011. Following a consistent presence at international festivals (including a special mention at Locarno 2011), “Crulic The Path to Beyond”, directed by Anca Damian, was awarded the Cristal d'Annecy for Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, therefore winning the most important European distinction for animation films. The Romanian animation film has seen an important revival and begins to matter again, and right now, Anim’est counts as its main platform of promotion, said Vlad Ilicevici, the festival’s executive director.

Anim’est has so far functioned in spite of extremely low funding, but due to a great deal of enthusiasm brought equally by the staff, the volunteers, the collaborators and partners, as well as the public.

Anim’est wants, can and has to grow. It’s a duty towards its public and towards the young animators it supports. It’s a natural progression, given the explosive growth of the global interest in animation. The percentage of 3D animation and CGI in the international cinematography is also rapidly increasing. If the local public institutions have not yet let themselves convinced, despite the festival’s achievements, Anim’est is addressing those for whom the festival was created in the first place: the public. Each of you matters to Anim’est and I hope that Anim’est matters to you too…Vlad Ilicevici added.

The fundraising campaign aims to achieve the amount of 15.000 euros to make possible the organizing of the 2013 edition and offset the costs of film rights, 35mm copies and cassettes transportation, the logistics required to organize an event of this type: exhibitions, workshops, performances, accommodation and transport for foreign animators.

Anim’est will reward those who choose to support the festival. Your donation comes with various benefits- special thanks in the festival publications, DVD’s containing Romanian animated short films, the 2013 festival’s Welcome Kit containing all materials designed for the guests, a three-day Anim’est 2013 VIP pass (including accommodation and access to all events and screenings). Also, in the event that it achieves intermediate targets (2000 euros, 5000 euros, 10000 euros), Anim’est has prepared a series of rewards and surprises: free-entry screenings, events and parties for festival supporters.
