Ten Vibrant Short Films Explore Nature, Folklore and the Anxieties of the Present

The Romanian Competition returns to Animest.21 (October 2-11, 2026) with a provocative and authentic selection: an updated scan of local artists’ minds, complete with worries and creative dreams. This year, the section's selector Mihai Mitrică has put together a compact 78-minute program which brings together ten short films, all premiering in Romania at Animest. Thus, the 2026 selection becomes a space dedicated to (re)discovering the newest voices in Romanian animation: fresh proof of filmmakers' courage to juggle genres, techniques and complex subjects, reminding us of the power of vulnerability.

"As a selector, one of my greatest joys every year is discovering where Romanian animation is headed. This time around, I noticed an interesting evolution in narrative courage, in self-possessed storytelling. Our creators are no longer shying away from exploring vulnerable and complex themes. For us, the Animest team, this is the most beautiful confirmation. Our programs dedicated to the animation industry serve this precise purpose: we don’t just want to screen films, but act as an active platform offering local animators the context and tools to refine their ideas and grow this creative niche," shared Mihai Mitrică, festival Artistic Director.

Ecological Echoes and the Force of Nature

A unique presence in this year’s Romanian selection is the documentary short film Here, There Was a Park / Aici a fost un Parc (directed by the Animators for IOR Collective), a 100% independent project born of the organic solidarity against illegal deforestation and fires in Bucharest. Going beyond simple animation, this anidoc is an act of civic activism through which 17 local filmmakers give a distinct voice to the community and residents of the Titan neighborhood. Co-initiated by directors Flavia Matei and Ștefania Bodescu, the project captivates through its carefully designed stylistic mosaic: mixed techniques – 2D animation drawn frame by frame, 3D modeling, traditional animation, and stop-motion – intertwine over the course of just 6 minutes and 35 seconds. Each visual style brings forth a different emotion of the community it represents, from the nostalgia of park-related memories to fear, revolt, and civic resistance. After international screenings at festivals such as Anibar and FAFF Berlin, this powerful example of militant cinema reaches home audiences, all the while showcasing the strength of conviction and creativity of the new generation of Romanian animators.

The Animators for IOR’s fully urban initiative is counterbalanced by the short film Catharsis (directed by Carmen Maria Dumitru), a reminder of the overwhelming force of the wild: when a young hiker in reach of solitude gets lost in the mountains, the illusion of human control shatters.

We Introspect, We Mourn, We Confront Our Psyche

Much of this year's selection delves deep into the human mind, addressing inner struggles and trauma. In Through the Porcelain (directed by Ioana Tudor), the pain of losing family drives a man to hire actors, create masks of his loved ones and host dinners at his house, maintaining the illusion of the past, while ...Leave the Door Open / ...Lasă ușa deschisă (directed by Lia Hawa Hristescu) shares an intimate exploration of the emotions triggered by the passing of the author's grandfather.

The past also catches up with us in HAPPY NEW YEAR (directed by Radu Gaciu): a woman arrives at a remote cabin in the mountains, where she must confront a painful memory from 2009. Sound too intangible? In Bedtime Routine / Ora de culcare (directed by Gabriel Stoiciu), Brian, a young insomniac exhausted by life’s many challenges, is forced to face his anxieties when his subconscious materializes into a playful spirit – who won’t leave him alone. Don't Waste Your Pearls on Me, Amen... (directed by Sebastian Lăutaru) draws a brave parallel between love and faith, also exploring how devastating the fear of hurting a loved one can be, and how it can end up affecting both partners.

A Sprinkle of Folklore, Humor, and the Supernatural

The Romanian Competition also includes productions whose absurd humor, magic and mythology strike perhaps an unlikely balance with their inherent emotional tension. Geese-y Does It! (directed by Alina Rusu) is a bubbly comedy featuring a gaggle of enterprising geese whose response to boredom is to secretly turn their coop into a luxury spa – unaware the project sinks their farmer into massive debt. In the mood for fantasy? In Karma (directed by Dan Panaitescu, one of the trainers in the Pitch, Please! program), 11-year-old Marty misuses a magic cube to punish the mistakes of those around him. We continue exploring the supernatural in Long Live the Crow / Prince Corvin (directed by Maria Adelina Petrescu), an adaptation of an old Transylvanian legend promising to reveal the dark secret behind the fabled Corvin Castle, an awe-inspiring medieval fortress in Transylvania.

Delve into Romanian animation’s newest offerings on Wednesday, October 7 at 8:30 PM, at the Romanian Peasant’s Museum Cinema. A final detail to sweeten the deal: starting with Animest’s last two editions, the Romanian Competition winner also becomes automatically Oscar-eligible (like the winner of the International Short Film Competition).
