Alois Nebel, presentations and special concerts on the 5th day of Anim'est
Tuesday, October 9, we will follow up two of the films in the feature film competition. Alois Nebel comes at Patria Cinema, from 8.30pm. After premiering in Venice last year (out of competition) and going through festivals like Toronto and Karlovy Vary, Alois Nebel (dir. Tomáš Lunák) will be projected for the first time at the 2012 Anim'est. Czech Republic’s proposal for this year's Oscars, Alois Nebel is an extremely compelling black and white animation: the late 80s, a dispatcher from a station near the border is lost in memories and begins to confuse present with past, a good opportunity to take a look at the tumultuous history of the twentieth-century Europe. The film is based on a comic book trilogy by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99: done by rotoscoping, the technique in which the actors are converted into animation, he keeps the noir vibe, the comics, but occasionally sweetened with characters’ tenderness.
Before the screening, at 8pm, occurs Alois Nebel’s exhibition, dedicated to the story which was so impressively and laboriously filmed by Tomáš Luňák.
At 10.30pm, Patria Cinema hosts the projection of another title in the feature competition: Daddy, I’m a zombie. The film, directed by Ricardo Ramón and Joan Espinach, 2012 Goya awards nominee, tells the story of Dixie, a teenager who hates the world as much as the world hates her. Abandoned by her best friend and humiliated by the boy of her dreams, Dixie runs into the woods during a terrible storm. When she wakes up from unconsciousness, being hit by a tree branch, Dixie reveals that she became ... a zombie.
At the Studio Cinema, from 6pm, last year’s Trophy winner, the Estonian ULO Pikkov presents a selection of his best short films, including Body Memory.
The student film competition is also at Studio Cinema: 8pm to 10pm. Various animation techniques, schools with different traditions, successful scenarios, praised graphic achievements.
Anim’est parties keep on going in Control club, Tuesday, October 9, 8pm with Sonic Play and Pericol (Danger).
Sonic Play, an electronic music band, with live drums, is Liviu Pop’s new project, a Romanian-born drummer, established in the U.S., a constant presence on the music scene in New England, working with various jazz, blues & soul artists, in addition to his own group.
Pericol (Danger) is actually Matze and Rolf. It takes the form of a live audio and video "dialogue" between Rolf and Matze, on two different screens side by side. "Words" that make up the dialogue are pieces cut from the TV, samples that were previously captured, adapted to an electronic music arrangement.
Entry to both concerts is free.
