Alois Nebel, Friday at Studio Cinema

For those who haven't seen Alois Nebel, there is still a chance, Friday, at 22:00 at Studio Cinema. After premiering in Venice last year (out of competition) and going through festivals like Toronto and Karlovy Vary, Alois Nebel (dir. Tomáš Lunák) will be projected for the first time at the 2012 Anim'est. Czech Republic’s proposal for this year's Oscars, Alois Nebel is an extremely compelling black and white animation: the late 80s, a dispatcher from a station near the border is lost in memories and begins to confuse present with past, a good opportunity to take a look at the tumultuous history of the twentieth-century Europe. The film is based on a comic book trilogy by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99: done by rotoscoping, the technique in which the actors are converted into animation, he keeps the noir vibe, the comics, but occasionally sweetened with characters’ tenderness.
