Fresh Frames: A New Generation of Creators Takes Over the Silver Screen at Animest.21

Animest continues to offer a launching pad for teenagers who love animation through the special Fresh Frames section, scheduled for Sunday, October 4, at 4.30 PM at the Peasant Museum Cinema.

Curated by Lidia Dîrțu, Roxana Constantinescu, and Sofia Toma, members of the Teen Jury from last year's edition, the section brings together nine short films made by high school students from Romania and the Republic of Moldova using 2D, stop-motion and mixed media techniques to explore themes such as introspection, reverie and the cycles of existence.

Pe drum / On the Road stands out: a collective animation by 10 young people within The Animation Incubator under the mentorship of directors Laura Pop and Iva Tokmakchieva. The film is based on a report signed by Raluca Cristea for Școala9 about the pets affected by the war in Ukraine and the people who cared for them.

The Fresh Frames selection also includes:

  • Oprimare / Oppression (directed by The Animation Incubator): a short film based on the poem of the same name by American poet Langston Hughes, reflecting the impact of the genocide in Palestine through the central symbol of a bird, as a metaphor for the oppressed.

  • Veronica Persica (directed by Cez Belivacă): a girl stuck in a daily cycle dreams about a perfect future.

  • Autoportret: fragmente din mine / Self-Portrait: Fragments of Me (directed by Sara Maria Bărbat): a poetic and introspective visual diary of the process of self-discovery, made of light, shadows and intense emotions.

  • Mnemotehnică / Mnemotechnics (directed by Iris Rotărescu): a visual representation of the neurological degradation of an elderly person, seen from the perspective of a family member.

  • Efectul fluturelui / Butterfly Effect (directed by Ruxandra Condrea): a fantasy adventure with dramatic accents, in which chasing a butterfly opens a portal to the dark side of the Moon and triggers a confrontation with the shadows of the past.

  • Play Giurgiu Intro (directed by Andrei Sprianu): a humorous sci-fi animation about an alien who lifts the city of Giurgiu off the Earth to kick off the festival.

  • Inuitul / The Inuit (directed by Dorin-Alexandru Mureșan): the spiritual survival journey of an isolated Inuit hunter, guided through the relentless frost by the animals whose lives he spared.

  • Săritură Cuantică / Quantum Leap (directed by The Animation Incubator): a journey through parallel worlds made by teenagers from Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova in the online Animation Lab workshop.

The Fresh Frames screening is a rare opportunity to discover the visual courage and sensitivity of an emerging generation of creators, demonstrating the vitality of film education and of industry workshops dedicated to the youth.
