AniMusic Night: Visual Rhythms and Live Improv with MC Tony Baboon
On Thursday, October 8, from 11 PM, music and cinema will unite to animate the Peasant Museum Cinema – expect an electrifying night of the most spectacular recent animated music videos. The AniMusic Competition means beats, bold techniques and big-name sound collabs, with a special guest: MC Tony Baboon will be working the room live, amplifying the screening with sonic improvisation and live looping.
This year's selection brings together 30 international and local productions that explore the connection between sound and image through radically inventive visuals.
Big International Names and Analog Wizardry
For Animest.21, we’ve curated another fantastic mixtape of hypnotic visual experiments that add new dimensions to the songs of legendary musicians. We’ve got everything from handcrafted to cutting-edge digital animation:
-
Cut Hands – Deftones (directed by Edd Carr): a handmade video built from over 2,500 individually printed frames using the cyanotype technique, exploring the mythology of the serpent through the lens of surveillance capitalism.
-
Traffic Lights – Flea feat. Thom Yorke (directed by Nespy 5euro): a surrealist take on urban alienation, in which a solitary silhouette plays the trumpet in a topsy-turvy reality, set to a collaboration between members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead.
-
One Last Miracle – Coheed and Cambria (directed by Alek Wasilewski): a heartfelt story about a child whose wish to Santa is to bring his mom back after she is detained by immigration authorities.
Auteur Stories and a Mesmerizing Local Scene
Regional tones and high-energy productions bring forward personal mythologies and dramatic showdowns:
-
Comet – Yes Mercy (directed by Nikita Dembinski): this Avanpost Production film follows a protagonist as he remembers a mysterious albatross he saw in his teens outside his class; his growing obsession leads to an epic imaginary showdown.
-
Agony – Mahaya & Buburuza (directed by Nicoleta Rasnita, Alina Malcic, Sandu Lupu, Iulia Calcic, Evelina Chiriac): a complex experimental animation created in Chișinău, blending clay, cutouts, and rotoscoping to tackle one ultimate question – what would you do if you only had one hour left to live?
-
Duél – Jinjer (directed by Oleksii Zatserkovnyi): a powerhouse single from Ukraine's celebrated metal band, illustrated through dynamic animation blending paper drawing with 2D digital graphics.
Fantasy Worlds, Myths and Rituals
From celestial revolts to mystical quests, music breathes life into captivating fantastical worlds:
-
The Phoenix – Siamés (directed by Mary Yanko, Marlène Ciampossin): angels rise up against oppression in a dystopian paradise of brutalist blocks and masked guards.
-
Other I – Kriill (directed by Alina Popescu): a young woman brings offerings to a cathedral devoted to a strange deity in this visual reflection on the pitfalls of blind faith and self-sacrifice.
-
Uninhuman – Juana Molina (directed by Dante Zaballa): an animated reimagining of the Monkey King legend from the classic Journey to the West, punished by the Buddha for becoming an unstoppable force.
