Award winning short films and an absolute premiere – Friday, at Union

On the first Anim’est day, Union Cinema is hosting two screenings short film fans cannot miss. From 6 p.m., the first screening scheduled at Union brings five nominees at the 2010 Cartoon d’Or, the pan-European award granted by the circuit of the most important animated film festivals on the Old Continent – Cartoon – Anim’est being part of this circuit starting this year. The Estonian film Crocodile (dir. Kaspar Jancis, 2009), winner of this year’s Cartoon d’Or trophy and Logorama (dir. François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy, Ludovic Houplain, France, 2009), 2010 Oscar winner for Best animated short film are just two of the highlights in the Cartoon d’Or programme.

A Romanian medium length film will screened as an absolute premiere during the programme of award winning short films continued on Friday, October 8th, at Union Cinema, starting 8 p.m. The Eastern European Animation Awards – EEAA, the programme reuniting films nominated by the most important animated film festivals in Eastern Europe, is coming to Union with the best 2009 film productions from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, nominated by the partnering festivals in the EEAA circuit. Marius Pandele’s White noise, winner of the Special Mention for Best Romanian Film at the 2009 Anim’est, the Sci-fi mockumentary Stray Cosmonaut (dir. Marija Milanović-Lazarevski, Serbia, 2009); or My Way (dir. Veljko Popović, Svjetlan Junaković, Croatia, 2010), the story of a peculiar character living on the border of real and animated world, are three of the best Eastern-European animated films produced in the past years, and are all part of the programme dedicated to EEAA. A day of Ionescu’s life, the medium length film directed by Mihai Şurubaru, screened for the first time ever, will complete the 8 p.m. screening programme with Ionescu’s bitter-sweet story, taking him through a series of unpredictable events, and landing him in an extremely difficult situation, where he needs a miracle to get himself out of.
