Films and Workshops for Children in MINIMEST Section

Anim’est for Children: Films and Workshops for Children in MINIMEST Section

The youngest animation fans have a new opportunity for joy at the beginning of October: this year’s Anim’est edition celebrates the festival’s 10th anniversary with a new selection of beloved films awarded all over the world that will be screened at Bucharest in the Minimest section. Besides, the most curious little ones will discover the mysteries of animation thanks to some workshops that will stimulate their imagination and teach them how to bring stories to life.

From Friday until Sunday, during both festival weekends (October 2nd-5th and 9th-11th), cinemas Elvira Popescu and Studio will welcome children to Minimest screenings.

This year, five animation feature films have been selected in the section dedicated to children. Three of them are Triple Trouble (dir. Albert 't Hooft, Paco Vink), a Dutch-Belgian production about three young pets that claim their right to Christmas presents, just like all children, Wolfy the Incredible Secret (dir. Éric Omond, Grégoire Solotareff), winner of the 2014 César Award for the best animation film, about the unlikely friendship between a wolf and a rabbit, and Mune Guardian of the Moon  (dir. Alexandre Heboyan, Benoît Philippon), an adorable 3D feature about the mischievous faun Mune and his mission to save the world. The selection is completed with two Norwegian films: Hocus Pocus, Alfie Atkins, directed by the well-known Torill Kove (who won an Oscar in 2007 and was nominated again this year) and Louis and Nolan’s Christmas (dir. Rasmus A. Sivertsen), which are selected as a part of the programme “Guest Country: Norway”, with the support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Romania and the Norwegian Film Institute.

The Minimest film selection will also include a Japanese short film series for children directed by Kōji Yamamura, one of the most important independent animators of the moment and Official Guest of this special Anim’est edition, with the support of the Japanese Embassy.

Another highlight of the children programme is the series of episodes The Adventures of Krtek the Little Mole, which brings to Anim’est screens, with the support of the Czech Centre, the famous animated character of the cartoon series created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler in 1956.

On top of all these, 25 short films presented in three different programmes will compete for this year’s Minimest Trophy. Children will enjoy stories with animals teaching something about life (Let’s Play A Story: the Ant and the Grasshopper, dir. Marina Andree Skop, Polariffic: Yeti or Not, dir. Rob Shaw), about the friendship between two apparently totally different beings, (Ivan and the Wolf, dir. Anna Levinson, The Tie, dir. An Vrombaut), with a small ecology lesson (Block and Piled, dir. Marc Riba, Anna Solanas) and a documentary for little researchers (The Voyage of the Beagle, Armadillo, dir. Jernej Lunder).

The educational component of Anim’est festival is more active in 2015 than ever: on this 10th anniversary edition, 10 one-day animation workshops will be organised for children of age 8-12 at the Balassi Institute, the Hungarian Institute at Bucharest, in the presence of two young animators and directors, trainers Ion Aramă and Serghei Chiviriga. Registration for these workshops can be made until September 27th by sending a short story of at most half an A4 sheet of paper, together with a drawing illustrating that story, to workshop@estenest.ro .

Furthermore, between the first and second screenings on weekends at Cinema Studio, creative workshops inspired from the themes and characters of the viewed films will be organised by our friends from Creative Arts and Da’DeCe Association. These workshops do not require registration. Moreover, before each Minimest screening Ion Aramă will carry on live animation demonstrations for children.

The tenth edition of Anim’est International Animation Film Festival will take place between October 2nd and October 11th 2015 at Cinema Studio, Cinema Elvira Popescu and Re: Animation Hub.

Tickets for Minimest section screenings will cost 7 lei and will be available for purchase online on www.eventbook.ro as well as at cinemas Elvira Popescu and Studio during festival. From Monday until Friday, access to screenings until 4:30 p.m. is free for children, students and retirees with student/senior cards.

Access to any Minimest screening will also be free for organized groups from schools, for children as well as for the accompanying teachers. Groups of at least 10 children accompanied by one adult at Saturday and Sunday Minimest screenings will be considered as organised groups if the reservation is made in advance at the email address andreea.lupu@animest.ro. For groups of at least 5 children accompanied by one adult, access to Saturday and Sunday Minimest screenings will be free for children.
