Norway is the country we invited for the tenth edition of the festival
The Anim'est anniversary edition, celebrating the festival’s 10 years of existence, brings Kōji Yamamura, one of the most popular independent animators of our time, to Bucharest between October 2nd and 11th.
Animator, director, writer and illustrator, the 51-year-old Japanese has an impressive portfolio of short films that combine 2D and 3D animation techniques, using primarily hand-drawing and stop-motion animation made with modelling clay.
Distributed in over 30 countries, his films, often inspired by Japanese folk tales, earned him several awards at the most important animation festivals in the world. The best known of his films are Mt. Head, the animation that won the Annecy Best Film Award and was nominated for the 2003 Oscars, Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor, winner of the Best Film Award at Ottawa Film Festival and at Trickfilm (Stuttgart) in 2007, or Muybridge's Strings, nominated for the Genie Best Short Animation Award in 2012.
Koji Yamamura has been invited to the 10th edition of Anim’est to be a part of the jury for the feature film and short film competitions and he is to present an animation program within the Minimest section dedicated to children, as well as a special selection of short films for adults.
Students will be invited to attend a masterclass held by Yamamura, who is also the founder of the animation section of the Tokyo University of Arts.
A new wave of northern air in Bucharest: Norway, the country invited to Anim'est 2015
Last year’s hefty slice of Danish animation is followed by a new generous sample of northern charm. A special section of the festival comprises three short film retrospective programs dedicated to Norwegian animation made from 1913 until the present day. Among them, the audience will have the opportunity to watch two well-known short films directed by Torill Kove: The Danish Poet which won the Oscar in 2007, and Me and My Moulton, nominated this year for the very same award. Three feature films will complement the extensive retrospective devoted Norway: Hocus Pokus Alfie Atkins (2013), an adorable 2D animation directed by Torill Kove, Free Jimmy (2006, directed by Christopher Nielsen) - a charming story for adults which addresses topics such as drug addiction, freedom, materialism or animal rights, and which is the winner of the Annecy Best Film Award, and The Christmas of Solan and Ludvig (2013, directed by Rasmus A. Sivertsen) - a 72 minutes stop-motion animation that will win over the spectators of all ages.
Special short films selection from Autour de Minuit studio
The audience present at the 10th edition of Anim’est festival will also be able to enjoy a selection of the best animated short films created by one of the most important studios in France, Autour de Minuit.
With a portfolio of nearly 200 films, the studio was founded in 2001 by Nicolas Schmerkin and it is responsible for Logorama, winner of the Oscar for best animated short film in 2010.
The animations made by Autour de Minuit are small innovative visual universes and they are selected each year in the competition sections and special programs of renowned festivals such as Annecy or Clermont-Ferrand. The studio also produces feature films, animated TV series (such as Babioles, distributed by Canal +) and thematic programs for children and teenagers which are screened in cinemas and at film festivals.
Besides the selection of short films presented within the "Guest Studio" section of the programme, the audience will have the opportunity to attend an official presentation of the studio, we will announce shortly when this is to take place.
