Pixar and AniMusic Night - seventh day at Anim’est

Thursday, October 11 promises to be filled with Anim’est screenings and special events.

From 4.30pm at Patria Cinema, you can find out what's new in the Balkans. The Balkanimation competition includes 14 films from Greece, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia and Romania. Among them are Abeyance (dir. Eleni Miltsi), an animation with heavy topics like existence and death, awarded at this year's national competition Animafest Athens, the largest festival of its kind in Greece, or Zasto slonovi? / Why Elephants? (dir. Marko Meštrović), a film about simple questions with complex answers, which premiered a few months ago at the International Animafest competition in Zagreb.

At 7pm, Patria Cinema will be hosting a very special event: for the first time in Romania, Daniel McCoy, a representative of the famous animation studio Pixar will give viewers an authentic lesson about directing and producing an animated film.

Daniel McCoy began his adventure in the world of animation at Pixar, in 1989, working for a series of long and short films. He was one of the first people who worked with the famous software developed by Pixar, RenderMan, a plug-in compatible with major 3D animation software platforms.

Recently, McCoy was a technical director for La Luna, the short film nominated for an Oscar this year. This short film shows a boy’s first day of work.  Along with his father and grandfather, the boy goes on an adventure at sea in a boat. Symbolically initiated into the world of men by being offered a cap, he realises that things are more complicated than he imagined.

The audience will be able to watch the short film during Daniel McCoy’s presentation.

At the Studio Cinema, at 8pm, spectators are invited to the Journey to Agartha. Present in the feature film competition, the film directed by Makoto Shinkai, tells the story of Asuna, who, after his father’s death, prefers solitary wanderings into the wild nature. Attacked by a monster, she is saved by Shun, a strange boy who claims he comes from Agartha, the legendary land of the gods.

Starting 9pm, we will initiate AniMusic Night in Control Club. The video&advertising projection will be followed by a special musical and visual performance.

The competition presents 25 animation clips and 11 spots. The newest clips: Gotye, Parov Stelar, Le Peuple de l'herbe, Louise Attaque or even Grinderman, Nick Cave's new band. "Don’t Worry, We'll Be Watching" – Gotye’s clip was selected in major festivals this year, such as Annecy or Berlin. From Annecy also comes the Polish clip, "Pirate's Life" - We Cut Corners and the French animation for "Do I Have Power" - Timber Timbre that competed in Clermont-Ferrand and Tribeca. The competition includes a clip made against violations of citizens' rights for Amnesty International or advertisements from companies like Avira, Nespresso, Toyota and French Railways.

After the projection, the atmosphere in Control Club will be animated by Warren Suicide LIVE, an electro-punk-art experimental band. Warren Suicide means Nackt and Cherie, and many more ... 3 albums, 8 singles, dozens of compilations and remixes. The band held concerts in major festivals in Europe as Rock am Ring, Glastonbury or Roskilde, and, since 2007, organizes workshops and takes part in collective happenings in Germany and Sweden. Their next album, "WORLD WARREN III" will be released on October 28.
