Project Worksheep, 3rd Edition in 2015

This October Anim’est International Animation Festival will be celebrating its 10th anniversary together with exceptional guests. Two of the most important animation studios in the world, Pixar and LAIKA, are coming to Bucharest to introduce the audience with the secrets of animation practised at the highest level.

In this jubilee edition, the educational component of the festival is even more on the rise, with a series of workshops, master classes, presentations and special screenings intended to whet the appetite for animation among animation fans of all ages and to reward those already initiated in the secrets of the animation industry.

At 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 8th, at Elvira Popescu Cinema, animation fans will be granted access behind the scenes of a major stop-motion production. Mark Shapiro, Head of Entertainment Brand Marketing at the famous animation studio LAIKA, will be back at Anim’est festival, after his 2012 participation. Mark will describe for the audience the complex process that allowed the production of the three Oscar-nominated LAIKA feature films: Coraline, ParaNorman and Boxtrolls, and will reveal how the studio creates whole universes by hand, piece by piece, at 24 frames per second.

At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9th, at Studio Cinema will be screened the latest Pixar production released by Walt Disney Pictures: Inside Out (dir. Pete Docter, Ronaldo Del Carmen), a story about growing maturity and about the mix of emotions that are associated with growing up, featuring some of the best-known voices of American comedians (Amy Poehler, Bill Hader or Lewis Black). The audience will wish to remain seated after the film, because immediately after the screening, at 8.30 p.m. Pixar veteran, art director and character designer Albert Lozano, will present the savoury details of Inside Out’s making-of.

Still at Cinema Studio, at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10th the audience is invited to discover exclusive aspects of Pixar productions in the presence of Albert Lozano. The special screening “Toy Story 20 years Anniversary” celebrates the first animation feature entirely made with CGI techniques, a milestone in the evolution of contemporary digital animation.

This year too Re:Animation Hub (Carol 53) invites the audience to get out of cinema theatres to attend presentations, master classes and special screenings. Among the notable guests of these meetings will be Uri Kranot, film director and trainer AniDox:Lab – the educational platform developed by The Animation Workshop — who comes to talk about the production of animated documentaries, Maroš Brojo, artistic director of the FestAnca festival, who will present a compilation of films from the  Visegrad Animation Rallye, the new project of the Visegrad Animation Forum, Andrea Martignoni, sound designer, author of the soundtrack of the Italian short film Big Bang Big Boom, winner of Anim’est Trophy in 2010, who will  give the sound master class Creating Soundscapes for Animation, Moïra Marguin, director of the Animation Department of the Gobelins School, will present the educational model of the famous French animation school, Milen Alempijević, artistic director of ANIMANIMA animated film festival, will tell tales of jazz and animation with the support of a relevant selection of short films and of a jazz session with Hot Club De Bucharest, Antoine Manier, director of the association Les Rencontres Audiovisuelles, who will bring before the public nine animation short films celebrating WWI centenary as part of the programme The Great War: Animated Memories, and Vassilis Kroustallis, ASIFA Greece member and Zippy Frames founder, who will present the programme Anthology: 70 years of Greek Animation, a short illustrated history of the first years of Greek animated cinematography.

This year the festival also resumes Project Worksheep, the animation short films project contest, now at its third edition. Young animators are invited to show their projects before some professionals. The best project will be awarded 1000 $ by HBO Romania and will also be provided coaching in its ulterior development. The project with the biggest potential will be chosen by a remarkable jury composed of Albert Lozano, Andrea Martignoni, Fernando Galrito (professor, critic, artistic director), Dan Panaitescu (animator) and Vlad Ilicevici (Anim’est executive director). Before the presentation, a workshop will take place, where the selected projects will receive guidance from two filmmakers of French feature film Adama: screenwriter Julien Lilti and film director Simon Rouby. Details about registration are available on Anim’est website.

The access to all Re:Animation Hub presentations and screenings and to Pixar/LAIKA presentations is free. The ticket offering access to the screenings of Inside Out and Toy Story 20 years Anniversary” costs 13 lei.

The tenth edition of Anim’est International Animation Film Festival will take place between October 2nd and October 11th 2015 at Cinema Studio, Cinema Elvira Popescu, Re: Animation Hub and Journey Pub. The festival programme is available online on the festival website.
