The Best 2011 Anim’est Films will be screened at Chișinău

The awarded movies at the Sixth Anim’est International Animation Film Festival will be projected at Chişinău, within a special edition held in Bucharest from 3 to 6 November 2011, at the Odeon Cinema. Serious, deep, thematically surprising, technical or visual movies, all being remarkable achievements of the contemporary animation films, will run in the Best of Anim’est 2011 program.

 

Hereby, the Moldavian audience will be able to see some short films such as Body Memory (d. Ülo Pikkov, Estonia, 2011), awarded with The Anim’est Trophy, getting nominated for the most important European animation short film award – Cartoon D’Or. According to the Anim’est jury, it’s a film with an experimental story in an unusual environment, with a strong visual language and a profound message. It raises the question about the existence of body memory, which could contain data about the entire ancestors’ suffering.

 

The Scream (d. Sebastian Cosor, Romania, 2011) will also be screened at Chişinău. A double-winning film at this year’s Anim’est: an animation studios production and Media Pro Magic visual effects, it won The Best Romanian Award and The Best Film in the Balkanimation section – for all regional productions. The film is a re-interpretation of the famous Edvard Munch expressionist works, creating cinematic expression of traditional art, motivating the jury's decision to give the award.

 

The External World (d. David O’Reilly, Germany, 2010), a film screened at prestigious film festivals, such as the ones from Venice or Sundance, USA, winner of thousands of international awards, comes to Chişinău as The Anim’est Best Short Film Award winner – competing with over 50 worldwide titles. Rewarded with a Special Mention within the same competition, Millhaven (d. Bartek Kilas,Poland,2010), a gothic short film, full of sick humour, its main character being a totally atypical teenager, is another multi-awarded title at worldwide film festivals, which is going to be projected for the first time in the Republic of Moldova.

 

Flamingo Pride (d. Tomer Eshed, Germany, 2011) was the Bucharest’s audience preferred short film, having granted it, through their votes, The Public Award. A delightful film that tells the story of a straight flamingo in a gay flock, that unexpectedly falls in love with a stork. Unable to convince her of the seriousness of his intentions, the hero is isolated and going through an identity crisis. An unexpected encounter gives the idea of ​​a bold initiative. The film competed in the Official Competition of the International Film Festival in Berlin this year, and has won awards at major animation film festivals such as Siggraph or Hamburg.

 

The German film, White no White (d. Samo - Anna Bergmann, 2011) and the Israeli Ishihara (d. Yoav Brill, Israel, 2010), winners of the Best Student Film Award, respectively, of a Special Mention in the same competition, one of the most appreciated by the Anim'est audience and guests, will also be projected in the special edition at Chişinău.

The Oscar, BAFTA and Cartoon D'Or nominee The Gruffallo (d. Jakob Schuh, Max Lang, 2009), about a clever mouse who walks through the woods and tricks a lot of predators, was also appreciated by the Minimest jury, made of children, receiving the award for the section consecrated for the youngest festival audience.

The clip made ​​for the song "I Say Fever" by Ramona Falls (d. Stefan Nadelmann, USA, 2010), winner of The Best Video Award, same as the advertising clip Vitra - Kuubo (d. Adrian Flückiger, Switzerland, 2010), rewarded with The Best Advertising Clip Award, complete the short film list awarded at the 2011 Anim’est and will also be projected in The Best Of Program in Chişinău.


The Anim’est International Animation Film Festival organizes a special edition in Chişinău, a first for a major film event in Romania, from 3-6 November 2011, Odeon Cinema. Inside of it will be projected dozens of short and feature films, and the public will be able to meet some of the filmmakers.
