The District – special production coming to Union Cinema
Sunday, October 10th, at Union Cinema, starting 6 p.m., this year’s Guest Country section dedicated to Hungary, presents the special screening of a film the Anim’est audience loves, followed by a discussion with the film’s producer, Erik Novak: The District (dir. Áron Gauder, 2005), the Hungarian film that won the 2005 Annecy Festival Trophy and Best animated film at the Sitges Festival.
A contemporary story about the children in Budapest suburbs around the year 2000, brought up in constant rivalry between families of Gypsies, Hungarians, Arabs and Chinese people, with Ricsie at the main character, the youngest of the Lakatos’, trying to bring his family back on good terms with the Csorbas, but, most of all, with their charming daughter, Julika. Two other Guest Country screenings dedicated to archive films are scheduled for the third festival day at Union Cinema: from 12 a.m., a rare feature film, extracted from Hungarian film history and highly appreciated by animation connoisseurs, Son of the White Mare (dir. Marcell Jankovics, Hungary, 1981), adapted after a folkloric Hungarian tale; and from 2 p.m. - a special anthological programme made out of the most important Hungarian animated short films of all times.
