FLIPBOOK FESTIVAL - Guest Festival

After decades of silence, Macedonian animation is back on the world stage. Once a proud part of Yugoslav cinema, today’s new wave of Macedonian animators is winning awards at major international festivals, placing the country firmly on the global animation map. At the heart of this revival stands Flip Book, an animation studio that, with the support of the Macedonian Film Agency, has produced more than twenty award-winning films. Its authors— Krste Gospodinovski, Ivan Ivanovski, Vladimir Lukash, and Zharko Ivanov—are celebrated internationally and, through ASIFA Macedonia, are actively shaping the global animation community. Building on this success, Flipbook Film Festival was launched in 2020 in partnership with the Youth Cultural Center and the Cinematheque of Macedonia. The festival showcases the best of European animated art films—both feature and short—alongside a program for children and retrospectives of Macedonian classics. More than screenings, the festival is a hub for creativity and collaboration. Workshops in scriptwriting and animation techniques (drawing, puppets, collage, sand animation) nurture young talent, while international guests and local professionals exchange ideas and build co-productions. Special initiatives also bring animation to children with special needs, making the festival a space of inclusion as well as innovation. The Flipbook Film Festival is a celebration of animated art: a meeting point for European creativity, a platform for the next generation, and a new cultural landmark in Macedonia.
